Did you know that pursuant to RCW 42.56.440(2), DD214’s that were recorded with the County Auditor on or before June 30, 2002, that have been commingled with other recorded documents, are subject to Public Disclosure? To protect your DD214 information you must record a Request for Exemption from Public Disclosure of Discharge Papers ($7.00 recording fee) with the County Auditor to exempt your DD214 from Public Disclosure requirements. Once this form is recorded, your DD214 may only be released to the Veteran, the veteran’s next of kin, a deceased veterans properly appointed personal representative or executor, a person holding a Veteran’s general power of attorney, or anyone else designated in writing by the veteran to receive the records.

If you have recorded your DD214 on or after July 1, 2002, pursuant to RCW 42.56.440(3) your DD214 is exempt from Public Disclosure requirements. Your DD214 can only be released to the Veteran, the veteran’s next of kin, a deceased veterans properly appointed personal representative or executor, a person holding a Veteran’s general power of attorney, or anyone else designated in writing by a previously recorded Request for Disclosure of Discharge Papers (no recording fee). If a Veteran has previously recorded a Request for Disclosure of Discharge Papers and would like to revoke the previous designees, a Revocation and Re-designation Of Disclosure of Discharge Papers must be recorded with the County Auditor’s Office (no recording fee).

To obtain a copy of your DD214, you must complete a Request for Access / Copy of Discharge Papers (no recording fee) and submit it to the County Auditor.

Pursuant to RCW 42.56.440(4) a deceased Veterans next of kin is described as the Veteran’s widow or widower who has not remarried, son, daughter, father, mother, brother, and sister.
